What Happens When You Win?

Do you wonder what happens after you win a sweepstakes? See what to expect and what to look for after you win that big prize! Look for the tips and pitfalls first. Follow these 9 steps to sweeps success.

First, You will get notified.

In nearly every case of winning a sweepstakes, the company or business sponoring the contest will reach out to you. Always make sure your contact information is up to date.

Second, Read the notice very carefully.

Confirm the notice is real and looks legit. Instructions on how to claim your winnings are covered in the notification letter so scan it carefully and look for any signs of a scam.

Third, Contact the person saying you won.

Reach out to the person who says you are a winner and talk it over with them. Confirm they are not a scammer with carefully selected questions and if it legit let them know you are the winner of the sweepstakes.

Fourth, Save and file your winnings.

Before you go any further record the details of your win for tax purposes. Often in the excitement of winning important details are forgotten months later when tax time comes. Do it now.

Fifth, File an official affidavit when required.

Nearly all notifications of being a winner come with a affidavit to fill out and return to confirm you are the winner.

Sixth, Get all paperwork notarized.

The best way to be official is to get all of your paperwork notarized in case of any future legal issues. Notarizing your winnings will keep you safe.

Seventh, Contact the sponsor of the sweepstakes again.

Let the sponsor (business, contact person) of the sweepstakes know that you have completed your affidavit and all official paperwork has been sent to them. Ask them if there are any last steps to claim your prize.

Eighth, Thank the sponsor.

Sponors like a grateful winner. It validates their efforts. It can even pay off more with additional prizes for some people. It is a nice thing to do.

Ninth, Look out for your prize!

This is the fun part! Watch for your prize winnings to come in the mail or by official courier. Courier is typically the most used method from sponsors especially when the sweepstakes included money or large items.

That’s it! Enjoy your sweepstakes win and enter again!
